Win and each-way betting

A win bet depends on the named horse winning the specified race. An each-way bet consists of two equal parts: one for winning and one for placing under the applicable terms. For example, a £1 each-way stake is a £2 total commitment, not a single £1 stake.

If the horse wins, both parts can pay; if it qualifies only for a place, the place portion may pay while the win portion loses. The number of paid places and the fraction of the odds depend on the race type and runners under orders.

What happens with a non-runner?

A non-runner is a selection that does not participate. The result can differ materially between ordinary racing bets, ante-post bets and a specifically labelled Non-Runner No Bet market. Sky Bet's official guidance explains that ante-post stakes are generally lost when the selection does not run, unless a relevant exception applies.

Do not assume a refund solely because a horse is withdrawn. Look for the market's explicit NRNB designation and the timing of the original wager.

Understanding Rule 4

Under racing rules, a late withdrawal can lead to a deduction from winnings on remaining selections. Rule 4 is designed to account for altered probabilities when a runner leaves the race after prices were taken. The deduction can affect the return even when the selected horse wins.

Official race status and operator settlement rules determine the final calculation. This guide deliberately does not present a hypothetical deduction as a current race quotation.
